May have been lifted? Hard to tell from updates.
!!! UNKNOWN CONTENT TYPE !!!

Anyone with more experience with these alerts care to chime in?
Edit, it is a 3000' ceiling. But still, I can't recall of hearing about many of these being implemented proactively. I worry about the folks in Ferguson (all of them).

Not the person with experience that you're looking for, but my only guess is there's going to be a lot of police helicopters, etc. and they don't want anyone else flying around making things messier?

It only extends from the surface to 3000 feet, which isn't very high. The airport is still open. Seems like there might be some sort of law enforcement exercise in Louis County, or to keep media away from certain high profile ground activity; ie riots.

The reason listed on the Federal Aviation Commission's website for the no-fly zone over the city is "TO PROVIDE A SAFE ENVIRONMENT FOR LAW ENFORCEMENT ACTIVITIES." ( via )
So that means 1) there will be lots of police helicopters, etc. flying around and they don't want any interference, or 2) they don't want any news choppers, drones, or anybody else filming what they are doing. Very possibly a combination of both.

I missed the ceiling. That's not extremely high, but my guess is most news helicopters operate within that airspace. I wonder how many crews there are with 1200mm lenses?

There's a burner over on Gawker posting repeatedly that he will stop posting gore/porn if Gawker reports on the No Fly Zone.

Considering the timing, I doubt it's the same guy. But who knows? Crazy is as crazy does.

Me too. But the crossover in people could exist. Overlapping circles and all that.

Could definitely still shoot video from that altitude. 3000 ft MSL is only about 2,500 feet above the ground over St. Louis. I guess they just don't want media helicopters crashing into police helicopters. I could see them canceling the TFR once things die down.

Looks like it was already lifted. I worried it was more of a proactive, but it looks like it was in response to shots fired at a police helicopter and they have since lifted the no fly restrictions.

Can somebody explain why this is news? I'm not sure if I should be outraged, concerned, or not care because I won't be flying / travelling near there any time soon.
Alternatively, do they deserve to die, and should I hope they burn in hell?

I know that at least one of the St. Louis television stations had a copter hovering over the area possibly all night the other night, streaming the content live to the web.
I just checked and they don't have the bug linking to the copter feed right now and they have a story (updated 10 minutes ago) according to the link, which says that they've been asked not to fly over the community, plus it sounds like the order is still in place.
(Don't judge that it's a Fox affiliate. They're partnered with the local newspaper and if you look at the videos I linked from Crosstalk over the weekend, they've done a better job than another station IMHO. Of course hovering a copter over a neighborhood might not be the coolest thing to do. I guess it depends on how many other helicopters there are around the same place)

That's a fairly callous approach.
My primary concern is that this isn't a routine way to handle this. And the no fly zone was scheduled to last a week.
IMO no one deserves to die.

A request and an order could be two different things. It's hard to say. Balancing safety and rights of the press and access to a neighborhood are very hard in situations like this. Thanks.
